Fashion history is fascinating to me, and how art history is a mirrored map of fashion throughout time.
In past eras people wore clothing to appear closer to God, light reflective fabric, high hats...
In this painting by Jan Van Eyck, in 1434, The Marriage of Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami,
The woman is wearing what is called "the pregnant stance", to mimic the virgin mary and her immaculate conception, this lady was said to not be pregnant, it was a fashion trend at the time. Nowadays, it's a really draped empire waist.
