I worked with Scarlett James for a photo shoot, a fashion show and she performed for our Spring/Summer 2009 Fashion Show. Scarlett is a burlesque performer here in Montreal, she does shows all over town. She is a very sweet, classy and enterprising woman, very ladylike.
Not only is she a performer but she also creates all of her costumes herself.
She started Bombshell Couture, which shows her lingerie, mini top hats and designs she uses in her shows. She is an inspiration to see as a designer, not only because of her performance but the costumes and accessories she uses in her shows.
What inspires you ,How did you get started?
Scarlett spent her childhood in beautiful France with her Mother, by the ocean of Brittany. She studied Ballet classic and modern Jazz as a teenager, admiring Dalida and her very dazzling outfits, Bigitte Bardot, May West, Sally Rand ,the American silver screen sirens on TV, movies with bombshell and Pin ups, Marilyn. Dreaming that one day she would have the chance to perform on stage in costumes as extravagant as these ones, create vintage styles and dazzle an audience. All that while working in a jewelry store in a small city near by... This is fine job but very quiet! At 20, she wanted adventures, action, and above all Glamor! So she left France for new horizons, Montreal.
She went to college in fine arts, she is a painter 3rd generation after her mother and grand father. But painting is not all she wanted to do. It was not enough. So she learned English, Spanish, took theâtre classes, acting classes, belly dancing , She travelled a lot, met new friends, made a new life and still looking for that ''je ne sais quoi''.
One day, good friends brought her to see a Burlesque show downtown and there it was, she had an epiphany ! That is it! All that she loved is packaged in it! Acting, dancing, amazing costumes, performances, travel, photography!
She did her first show, the public opened their arms warmly, she fell in love, she was hooked!
Ladies and Gentlemen, that's how was born Scarlett James!
What is your current vice or trend or obsession ?
"Right now, It is Making costumes. Everything is inspiring, every song is an opportunity to create a new show, every movie is a trigger to the imagination! Of course, everything must be feathered and bedazzled!" That is Scarlett's trend.
What advice would you give to someone else trying to make their ideas a reality?
"There is no secret to success. There is only one way to get there. HARD WORK and dedication with a twist of perseverance. So it all depends on yourself, how bad you want it and how smart you are about it."
