I encounter a lot of people washing their clothes in the meanest way possible!!!
It doesn't make sense to spend your money on something than to treat it like garbage.
I find a lot of people are still in the mind frame of consume consume consume and used to buying mass produced clothing, it was a 10$ shirt, it's fine to end up in the trash once the style and colors fade and the fabric piles. Of course you'd wash the whole lot in the machine and dry the hell out of it in the dryer. This mind frame is dangerous, irresponsible and unfashionable.
If you want to be eco-conscious take care of your surroundings, buy things made ethically and of quality to last and treat it well to get the longest use out of it, while being nice to the environment.
I make beautiful clothing, work with beautiful clothing and sell beautiful clothing, I was mean to my own clothing and wasn't getting as much wear out of my clothes as I could.
I had to learn how to take care of it! It took me years to get to this mind set but now I appreciate my clothing so much more.
For doing your laundry I suggest:
-Use cold water in the machine to preserve color and fabric and try not to use the dryer.
It is better for your clothing! ( I use it for towels in the winter)
-Use a shorter machine cyle
-Do up the zips, buttons etc and wash inside out.
-To preserve dark colors hang or lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight.
-Whites can go in direct sunlight though! It will brighten it, you can also use a lemon peel in a sock to help whiten whites.
-Always lay wool flat to dry.
-Also suggest using detergents nicer to your clothing, your skin and the ocean.
-I also like to use a hand held steamer too, it holds off on wash times and is more gentle on your clothing and it irons at the same time, you can put a wee bit of good smelling essential oil in the water too.
I like JR watkins. A friend also made me a homemade detergent by grating a bar of organic soap, 1/2 c. borox, 1/2 c. baking soda, with a bit of lavender oil.
