Jeannie Taylor of Curse in the Woods

I met Jeannie when doing Bad Taste Burlesque's shows. She always has these beautifully haunting acts and incorporates hand made masks into her costumes in her acts.
I wanted more information so I asked her if I could interview her.
She is currently recording an EP this very moment with her band Curse in the Woods which will be released in February 2010. I suggest checking back on the site to hear brand new tracks and get info about their upcoming shows.
If it is as hauntingly beautiful as her voice for her burlesque acts I can't wait!

What do you do?
I sing for Curse in the Woods, a band based in Montréal, Québec.
I perform mask dances and sing as a storyteller accompanied by the original musical compositions of co founder Samuel Harvey-Savard, backed by Steve Incze on double-base, and Natalie Fontaine-O’Connell with violin.
I design and create masks for my stage character as well as illustrate pen and ink work relating to or inspired by the music of Curse in the Woods.

What inspires you to do what you do?
The existence of suffering.

How did you get started?
I have always loved singing and I have always loved costumes. For those reasons I have been involved in dance, music and theatre in some way or another all my life and I hope I always will.
The character named Curse in the Woods was borne on stage as a cabaret-singing act for the “Ooops Johnny” Burlesque troupe first appearing in Montréal in 2005.
I have continued to perform as this character ever since, with a number of related burlesque spectacles, most recently in August 2009 with Bad Taste Burlesque at their regular haunt Café Cléopatre, that delightful drag venue doomed for demolition.
Curse in the Woods the band developed independently from burlesque through the merging of my character and the Montréal band Beth Sheniam, Samuel: accordion, Steve: base, Natalie: violin, as well as their forth member Dan Krutzelmann: clarinet. The moment I heard their music I fell in love with them. I was lucky enough that they invited me to be a part of their music projects and the foundation of Curse in the Woods was solidified.

What is your current vice or trend or obsession?
Flirting with women and listening to vinyl at the same time!

What advice would you give to someone else trying to make their ideas a reality?
Focus.
